Following Sunday’s loss, Gattuso declared that Marseille, who have now lost six straight games, have “hit rock bottom.”

A person with knowledge of Monday’s negotiations said that the Italian acknowledged he “no longer had any solutions” to turn around Marseille’s performance.

The same source states that Gattuso’s exit is anticipated to be more akin to a mutual parting of ways than a dismissal.

Arriving at Marseille towards the end of September, the 46-year-old took over for Marcelino Garcia Toral, who resigned after only seven competitive games in command.

Marseille has not triumphed since hosting Clermont on December 17, with the exception of a close 1-0 victory against fifth-tier Thionville in the French Cup. Rennes then managed to knock them out of the cup.

A 2-2 draw away to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League play-offs, with the return leg at the Velodrome on Thursday, has been their lone bright light thus far.

The club is actively searching for Gattuso’s replacement, even if the specifics of his departure have not yet been finalized. The insider claimed they were searching for a “man of action, capable of getting into his players’ heads and wanted more of a francophile” after passing on a Spaniard and an Italian.
