Type: Bachelor/Masters Degree

Number of Scholarships: For bachelor’s and master’s degrees, there are up to 10 scholarships worth NZ$10,000 and up to 9 awards worth NZ$5,000 for master’s degrees only.

Scholarship value/inclusions:

  • The grants are worth between $5,000 and $10,000 NZD. This half-fee-based grant will help with your tuition costs for one academic year.
  • If a housing application is submitted to the Accommodation Service by the deadline, recipients of the Scholarship will be assured an offer of a spot in the Halls of Residence.

  • For consideration, candidates must be beginning foreign students enrolled in bachelor or graduate programmes who are paying the entire cost of tuition abroad.
  • Applications must have been accepted by the Victoria University of Wellington (conditional or unconditional).

Tongarewa Scholarship at Victoria University of Wellington Application guidelines:

  • Before the deadline, you must send a finished online registration in order to register. The dates for grant applications are 1 June 2023 for Semester 2 (2023), 1 September 2023 for Semester 3 (2023), and 30 November 2023 for Semester 4. (Trimester 1, 2024). Typically, applications will be available one month before the deadline.

Documentation specific to the Tongarewa Scholarship at Victoria University of Wellington

Your online scholarship application must include the following documentation:

  • a personal statement of up to 500 words describing why you want to study at Victoria University of Wellington, your academic goals, and why you deserve the scholarship. Include any leadership positions you have held as well as details about your involvement in your school or community.
  • full transcripts and other relevant documentation for the qualification type
  • a place offer from Victoria University of Wellington (conditional or unconditional).

A panel of Wellington University International staff will make the final decision.

These scholarships cover only a portion of the tuition. These scholarships will be applied to tuition fees after the final withdrawal date for the trimester courses for which the recipient(s) has been awarded (roughly two weeks into the trimester).

Terms and Regulations

  • On the closing date, a completed online application must be submitted by 4:30 pm. Applications that are late or incomplete will not be accepted. In order for the application to be considered, any required supporting documentation (including references) must be received by 4:30 pm on the closing date.

  • All scholarship offers will be conditional on the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full-time will be at the level of points considered full-time by Studylink) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship. The Scholarship will not be paid until this condition is met.

  • The Scholarship cannot be carried over to another year.

  • The Scholarship may be combined with other awards.

  • If the recipient withdraws from the Victoria University of Wellington during the scholarship period or fails to make satisfactory progress, a portion of the scholarship will be expected to be repaid. If a recipient wishes to withdraw, they must notify the Scholarships Office.

  • Recipients are expected to act as Victoria University of Wellington Ambassadors and to participate in appropriate events or marketing as requested.

  • The application of the Scholarship terms and conditions may be modified at the discretion of the Deciding Authority in special circumstances or to avoid hardship to any candidate for the Scholarship.
