Last June, Benzema left Real Madrid after 14 years to sign a three-year contract worth allegedly £86 million per season with the Saudi Pro League team.

The 36-year-old has 12 goals in 20 Middle Eastern games, but he is experiencing difficulties in Saudi Arabia.

Benzema did not show up for the start of Al-Ittihad’s preseason campaign last Friday.

This meant that the rest of the team went to Dubai without him over the weekend.

Marcelo Gallardo, the club’s head coach, has ordered Benzema not to join his teammates, casting doubt on his future.

United is one among the clubs interested in offering the former Ballon d’Or winner a return to Europe, and the Premier League side expects a reaction in the coming weeks.
