Before joining Arsenal in 2021, Tomiyasu had stints with Belgian club Sint-Truiden and Italian club Bologna, having started his career with Avispa Fukuoka.
After representing several youth teams in the past, Tomiyasu was called up to the Japan national squad in 2018. In addition to playing in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2023 Asian Cup, he was a member of the team that advanced to the 2019 AFC Asian Cup final.
