In an interview with Yahoo!, Danny Brogan, the executive editor of Common Sense Media, a company that evaluates and analyzes children’s media, discussed Gerwig’s “maturer content.”
“I think Gerwig has included all this maturer content knowing that a large portion of the audience will be millennials and members of Generation Z — people who grew up with Barbie during the ’80s, ’90s, and ’00s — looking for that nostalgia but also to be entertained,” Brogan said. Regarding its “suggestive references,” many of the phrases that may be considered to be such will likely pass unnoticed by viewers, especially young ones.
Why is ‘Barbie’ rated PG-13?
The Motion Picture Association gave “Barbie” a PG-13 rating for “suggestive references” and “brief language.”
Regarding explicit allusions, one of the movie’s teaser trailers features a scene on the beach in which Ryan Gosling’s character, Ken, says, “I would beach you off.” Liu’s Ken replies, “I’ll beach off with you any day,” and the situation becomes worse before Robbie declares, “Nobody’s gonna beach anyone off.”
Other conversation lines with similar puns can be found throughout the film, such as when Kate McKinnon’s Weird Barbie character says, “I’d like to see what smooth blob he’s packing in those shorts,” in reference to a Ken figure.
