Ben Roberts, the club’s goalkeeping manager, has been a major proponent of signing Sanchez. Roberts worked as a coach with the Spaniard at Brighton before accompanying Graham Potter to Chelsea.

Chelsea had been looking for a high-level goalkeeper to compete with Kepa and began the summer by investigating a deal for Andre Onana, only to see the Cameroon international join Manchester United instead.

Due to AC Milan’s exorbitant asking price, a bid for Mike Maignan was also ruled out.

Sanchez’s Premier League experience, along with the fact that he counts towards Chelsea’s homegrown quota as a result of his time at the Brighton academy, has helped him gain favor with the club’s recruitment department.

Chelsea and Brighton are still in talks on midfielder Moises Caicedo, for whom the Blues have previously had multiple bids rejected this summer.

Brighton quickly rejected an £80 million bid, insisting on £100 million to part ways with their star midfielder.
