Team Nigeria secures Six Medals at Weightlifting Championship in Egypt: Rafiatu Folashade Lawal and Adijat Adenike Olarinoye, weightlifters from Team Nigeria, earned six medals on Monday at the 2024 Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship, which is now taking place in Egypt.

Lawal and Adijat, who competed in the 59kg women’s division, swept the top spots on the opening day of the competition, which doubles as a qualifier for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Lawal, who won the gold medal in Tunisia the previous year, proved she was the best in the category by winning all three of the available gold medals.

She took home the first gold in the snatch event with a lift of 95 kg, the second gold in the clean and jerk event with a lift of 119 kg, and the third gold medal overall with a lift of 214 kg.
Adijat, for her part, did the same on her expedition the year before, winning all three silver medals (209 kg overall, 94 kg in snatch, and 115 kg in clean and jerk).
Edidiong Umoafia Joseph, a competitor in the 73kg men’s division, will try to strengthen Nigeria’s pursuit of more medals and a spot in the July Olympics in Paris today at noon.
Joy Eze Ogbonne will fight in the 71kg women’s division on Wednesday, capping Nigeria’s involvement in the championship.
