Chichi Nworah’s daring criminal drama Shanty Town portrays the tumultuous and gloomy underground world of Lagos. When it was released in early 2023, it was the talk of the town.
The first of what will be a biennial series of reports, “What We Watched,” offers insights into viewership statistics and covers important details including hours viewed, debut dates, and worldwide availability. For a comprehensive picture of what’s being seen, the study includes over 18,000 titles and approximately 100 billion hours of viewing, or 99 percent of all Netflix content.
The popularity of Shanty Town is evidence of the rising demand for real African stories conveyed by real African voices. Nigerian director Nworah, who has a talent for crafting intricate storylines, has created a world full of unadulterated emotion, thought-provoking societal commentary, and suspenseful moments.
The program explores the lives of impoverished Lagos slum dwellers, whose goals and hardships were shared by people all over the continent.
The African audience found great resonance in Nworah’s work, demonstrating that Nigerian narratives can stand up to the greatest on a worldwide scale.
Shanty Town is second only behind South Africa’s suspenseful mystery thriller Unseen, with 60 million hours viewed between January and June 2023, with 27.3 million hours.
