Firstly, the AREF-MRC Towards Leadership Programme 2023–2024 is now accepting applications. The initiative seeks to equip bright young African scientists to compete successfully for the UKRI MRC and other significant funding opportunities in global health research. African scientists will get funding from the MRC and the Africa Research Excellence Fund (AREF), which will help them reach their full leadership and global health research potential.
AIM Of AREF-MRC Towards Leadership Programme
The program will take place between October 2023 and October 2024 and will include a virtual workshop in addition to two residential workshops (the opening and closing).
The AREF Towards Leadership program’s goal is to enable brilliant young African scientists to excel as leaders in the ecosystem of international health research. Together, we are supporting exceptional African scientists in Africa, improving their capacity for leadership and global health research.
Programme outline
The following components make up the program:
- At intervals of six months, three combined workshops that are motivational and useful.
- Additional webinars, lessons, and online resources
- Assessments and evaluations at the beginning and end of the program
- The participation of all parties involves cooperation.
The Program’s topics are adapted to each cohort’s needs and include the following:
- The Researcher As Leader
- The Effective Researcher
- The Researcher As Communicator
- The Compelling Applicant
- The Researcher As Manager
Cost:
For chosen nominees, MRC and AREF will pay for the seminars as well as their lodging and transport costs.
Eligibility requirements
Furthermore, Candidates must be early career researchers leading their own research group and inhabitants of an African nation who are employed by an accredited African university or research organization. They must have experience securing research funding and either a research doctorate or a medical or clinical degree with a suitable master’s degree.
Process of selection for AREF-MRC Towards Leadership Programme
Applicant must give evidence of their capacity to advance both themselves and their home institution, offer a compelling personal statement, and secure a letter of support from a senior authorized representative of their employing institution in order to be accepted.
