BREAKING: Court grants Emefiele N20m bail

On Tuesday, a Federal High Court that was sitting in Lagos granted Godwin Emefiele bail. Emefiele was the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) immediately before the current Governor.

The judge decided to release Emefiele on bail in the amount of N20 million with a guarantee in the same amount.

The Department of State Service, DSS, had previously charged him with illegal possession of a firearm on two counts. This development followed those charges.

After his client pled not guilty to the two counts of the indictment, Emefiele’s attorney, Joseph Daudu, sought for his client to be released on bond, arguing that the offense with which Emefiele was accused is one that can result in release on bail.

After being placed on administrative leave by President Bola Tinubu, Emefiele was taken into custody by the DSS approximately one month ago. At around 9:23 in the morning, he was delivered to the courthouse in a white Toyota Hilux pick-up van with the license plate obscured.

Nicholas Oweibo, the judge in charge, decided that the charges brought against Emefiele are ones that may be released on bond, and the bail was set at the same amount as the charges, with one surety required.

More than six weeks after his arrest and detention by the Department of State Services (DSS), Emefiele was arraigned before Justice Nicholas Oweibo, who was on holiday.
