As global temperatures increase and ice melts, violent floods from glacial lakes trapped by loose rock has grown more common. Climate experts warn that this presents a growing hazard over the larger Himalayan mountain range.

Authorities said that 14 bridges had been swept away and that roadways had sustained “severe” damage.

Roads were blocked and communications were disrupted across wide stretches as rescuers struggled to reach individuals affected by the water.

An Indian Army official, Himanshu Tiwari, told AFP that “Floodwaters have caused havoc in four districts of the state, sweeping away people, roads, bridges.”

According to the army, 22 servicemen are among the missing. One soldier who had been missing was found.

In a statement, the army said that it was attempting to restore phone service and provide “medical aid to tourists and locals stranded.”

Situated near India’s borders with China and Nepal, Sikkim has a sizable military force.

China’s increasing military aggressiveness has caused India to be cautious. And the two countries’ 3,500kilometer (2,200-mile) shared border has long been a source of friction due to Beijing’s claims to portions of Sikkim.
