DAAD Leadership for Africa Master’s Scholarship Programme

The DAAD “Leadership for Africa” (LfA) scholarship program supports young refugees and national academics from Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Niger, Nigeria, and Togo at German higher education institutions by helping them improve academically.

Firstly, This program aims to aid in the education of future leaders, who will be crucial for the continued growth of their home nations during a period of violence and displacement in several African countries. Also, scholarships for Master’s degrees in Germany are available through “Leadership for Africa” to qualifying candidates in all fields of study, also with the exception of medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, law, the arts, and then architecture.

The recipients of “Leadership for Africa scholarships gain access to a complimentary training program in civil society, good governance, and career development.In addition to the usual academics, the required program must be completed.

Objective

Again, young refugees and national scholars from Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, and then Uganda are supported academically and professionally through the “Leadership for Africa” (LfA) scholarship program in German higher education universities. In addition, this program aims to aid in the education of future leaders, who will be crucial for the continued growth of their home nations during a period of violence and displacement in several African countries.

Scholarships for Master’s degrees in Germany are available from “Leadership for Africa” to qualifying candidates in all fields of study, with the exception of medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, law, the arts, and architecture. Requirements

The initiative has two demographics in mind:
1) Highly qualified refugees who are granted refugee status and meet the requirements for master’s degree study in Germany.
Candidates must meet the requirements listed below:

  • having been given refugee status in their host countries prior to April 3, 2022
  • Either Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, or Uganda must be the country of asylum.
  • Bachelor’s degree earned and completed at the time of application

2) Graduates with the requisite credentials for Master’s studies in Germany who are from Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, or Uganda.
Candidates must meet the requirements listed below:

  • Again, Ethiopian, Somalian, South Sudanese, Tanzanian, or Ugandan nationality
  • Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, or Uganda is where you currently reside.
  • Bachelor’s degree earned and completed at the time of application

Please be aware:

  • Only programs relating to public health or biomedicine are open to applicants with a medical degree. The Master of Medicine program is not eligible for financing.
  • The DAAD offers subject-specific scholarship programs for candidates in the arts and architecture (see individual DAAD scholarship offerings in the scholarship database).

Benefits

The scholarship includes:

  • German language instruction in Germany for up to six months prior to the commencement of university studies
  • Starting in the winter term of 2024 (September/October 2024), a public or state-recognized German institution will provide a tuition-free M.A. or M.Sc. degree program.

Duration of the funding

Typically, chosen students will enroll in a German language program in April 2024 and then begin their studies there by about October 1st, 2024. The length of funding depends on the typical length of study for the program of choice. In general, two years of full-time study are needed for qualified master’s programs.

Value

  • Prior to the start of the study program, students may take a German language course in Germany for up to six months. This course includes housing, pocket money, then test expenses for a German language certificate (TestDaF or DSH test). Depending on study requirements and German language proficiency, the DAAD determines whether to sponsor participation and for how long. Again, It is required to take a language course.
  • payments at the scholarship rate of 934 EUR a month
  • adequate private/personal liability, health, and accident insurance in Germany

Annual study bonus

  • If necessary, a monthly rent subsidy and a monthly allowance for any accompanying family members (spouse and/or children).
    Due to the length of the visa applications for some home or host countries, family reunions may be postponed or even impossible during the scholarship period

How to Apply

  • Get the online application form and fill it.
  • Prepare application documents
  • Documents should be translated if necessary (unless they are already in English or German).
  • Scan paper documents into PDF format, excluding references. Please be aware that the site only accepts PDF file uploads.
  • Upload the PDF versions of the application form and other supporting papers to the portal. The document published in the original language should be uploaded along with any necessary translations.
    Upload your application materials, then submit them online.

Application-Required Documents

  • First, Completed online DAAD application form (found on the DAAD portal)
  • Secondly, curriculum vitae (maximum 3 pages) that details your academic background to date, any scholarships you have received, your current address, and any employers you have worked for recently or in the past. To submit a specimen, please visit https://europa.eu/europass/en.
  • Thirdly, Letter of Motivation (1-3 pages), detailing your academic, professional, and then personal motivations for the intended research project. And then Point 1 of our Important Scholarship Information.
  • Fourth, Completed DAAD Form “Study Course Profile” (please list 3 Master’s programs). Also be advised that the DAAD does not take into account your recommendations for master’s programs that charge tuition. When choosing between master’s programs, this should be taken into account. Please take note of the instructions for completing the “Study course profile” form. Every year, changes to the form are possible;
  • Only Students who can also persuasively explain why they want to get another master’s degree will be taken into consideration, then whether they already have a master’s degree or are working toward one. Again, kindly complete the “Additional Master’s Degree” form.
  • Also, Proof of language proficiency required for the desired master’s programs. Please read Section A, Point 9 of our critical information for scholarship applicants.
  • Again, transcripts of records for all study years with all individual grades and a description of the grading system are included with the university degree certificate that lists the final grade(s).
  • Again, Copies of your passport/national identification card, copies of the biodata page of your passport/national identification card, and then any other documents that provide details about you and then your place of residence at the time of application.
  • Also, Regarding refugees: a refugee ID card, UNHCR registration, or formal government or authority proof of asylum.

Optional

  • Finally, Additional files that may be relevant to your application (such as work and/or internship certificates, evidence of prior scholarships, proof of involvement in extracurricular activities, recommendation letters, and then (expired) admissions to a German master’s program).
